On a sunny Saturday, the LIFE Street HP Reno project team from ShiftUp and kliQ-Berlin eG came together in Berlin-Zehlendorf to visit one of our pilot neighbourhoods.

This residential area, nestled in a forest and home to nearly 10,000 people, has a history dating back almost 100 years. Axel Friedrich, Ulrich Döbler, Christian Küttner, and Florian Bonert met in the community hub, the „Kieztreff“, followed by a walking tour through the neighbourhood.

🔍 Since early 2024, Axel has personally visited 94 households, 2-3 times each, conducting preliminary energy assessments. One major finding: most residents don’t know what their heating actually costs – highlighting the urgent need for better awareness and information.
🎯 Within Street HP Reno, our local partner kliQ-Berlin eG aims to standardise installation processes and reduce costs, so heat pumps can be installed collectively across the neighbourhood. But there are site-specific challenges:

👉 Historic building protection rules often prohibit outdoor installations in front gardens.
👉 The current idea: place the heat pumps in garden sheds behind the houses, though this requires long pipelines into the home.
👉 Other options like rooftops (expensive to install) or basements (potential noise issues) are being explored.
kliQ-Berlin eG is a community-led cooperative committed to shaping the district between Krumme Lanke, Onkel-Toms-Hütte, and Oskar-Helene-Heim into a socially just, ecological, and climate-friendly neighbourhood.
We’re proud to support them in making this vision a reality!
